Negative calorie foods? I know what you are thinking. Yeah right. All foods have calories. Yes. You are right. All foods do have calories. Certain foods however, specifically low GI (glycemic index) foods – mostly fruits and vegetables – that are so low in calories that require your body to burn more calories for digesting them than they contain. To make up for the difference, your body burns stored fat as the source of energy to digest the food.

Wait. There’s more.

Thanks to the high fiber content of these foods, you feel fuller longer than with other foods. Your hunger and your cravings are greatly reduced. You eat less yet are healthier while still losing weight.

As you can see the list includes fruits, vegetables, spices and some seafood. I put it all together to make it easier to find what you are looking for when you want to know if a certain food is negative or not. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to search through multiple lists of spend all day searching the internet for this info. So I did it for you so you can print it out as one list and take it with you to the store when you grocery shop so you know what to buy and not buy without guessing.

A few things to keep in mind when using negative calorie foods in your diet. It is best to eat whole foods, not pre-made juice. Those contain sugar and tons of calories. You can blend the foods yourself and drink them immediately if you want a juice or smoothie. Naturally organic is best if you can get it and it is better to eat them raw or lightly steamed to get as many nutrients as you can from them.

The biggest no-no is don’t mix eating negative calorie foods with empty calorie foods (like junk food – ie chips and cookies). They don’t balance each other out. The junk food just makes the benefits of the negative calorie foods disappear. It is best to eat them on their own or with something else that is very low calorie or some lean meat like a small piece of boneless skinless chicken breast. One serving of meat is the size of a deck of cards. One serving of fruit and vegetables is the size of a tennis ball. Remember that sauces have calories too and to count those when you use them.

Dieting doesn’t have to be boring. As you can see from the list above there are many tasty delicious foods that will not only not add to your waistline but shrink it. So have fun with them. Be creative and you will be rewarded as the pounds melt away faster than you think.
